Third Grade

The third grade curriculum in Virginia Beach City Public Schools emphasizes reading and its importance in all subject areas. A variety of reading comprehension strategies, along with the Virginia Standards of Learning are applied and taught in Language Arts and all content areas. Cursive writing is introduced, and all students will learn to write legibly.

In Everyday Math, many concepts spiral from year to year to insure mastery. In science, a broad array of topics, including simple machines, various environments, and natural occurring cycles, are explored. In social studies, students compare civilizations such as ancient Greece, Rome, and Mali. Important people and events are also investigated.

The third grade teachers at Tallwood Elementary encourage parental support and involvement as they prepare each student for the SOL tests given in late May or June. A successful and exciting year awaits all third graders at Tallwood Elementary!
