Reading Resource

Tallwood Elementary School, Virginia Beach, VA

Reading Resource Program is an important part of the Langugae Arts Program at Tallwood. Guided reading is a major focus of the program and a large amount of time and attention is given to it. The Reading Resource Specialist (RRS) works with students to build reading strategies so the each child can become a successful reader. The RRS also meets with small groups of students for 30 minute time periods. In these small groups, specific grade level SOLs are reinforced.

At the request of teachers and/or parents, the Reading Specialist will give informal reading tests to students. These tests help determine a student's current reading level and provide information to parents and teachers regarding the student's language arts strengths and weaknesses.

Reading Specialists' Recommendations for Reading at Home.

Have your child read daily.

Read with your child.

Read to your child.

Have your child tell you about what he/she is reading. Understanding what is being read is an essential part of the reading process.

Let your child see you reading. Children will acquire a love for reading if they see how important it is to you.
