The
overall mission of the Physical
Education program at Tallwood and all Virginia Beach
City Public Schools is to enable students to develop positive
attitudes and behaviors toward physical activity and lifetime
fitness. Students at Tallwood Elementary in grades 1-5 attend
physical education classes 5 days a week for 45 minutes each
day. They participate in structured activities using a variety
of equipment to develop an
acceptable level of fitness and useful physical skills.
Students are evaluated on individual effort and skill
performance in each instructional area.
Throughout
the year, students participate in a variety of special events
and activities. Fourth and fifth grade students perform
National Fitness Tests during the months of October,
December, March, and May. All students participate in
National Women's Sports Day in February,
National Sportsmanship Day in March, and a wide
variety of activities as part of National Health and
Physical
Education Month in May. Included in these activities
are the Hershey' Track and Field event for fourth
and fifth graders, and Family Fun and Fitness
Day, a day when family members are invited to
participate in scheduled PE activities.
