Reading Resource

Reading is an important part of the Language Arts Program at Tallwood Elementary. Guided reading is a major focus of the program and a large amount of time and attention is given to it.

The Reading Specialist (RS) works with students and teachers to implement reading and writing strategies. In some cases, the RS works with students in small groups to reinforce reading and writing strategies and review SOLs. At other times, the RS works in the classrooms along with classroom teachers to incorporate instructional strategies that are proven to help students become better readers and writers.

Classroom teachers assess students’ reading ability. However, at the request of teachers and/or parents, the Reading Specialist can give informal reading tests to students. These tests provide information to parents and teachers regarding the student's language arts strengths and weaknesses.

Reading Specialist’s Recommendations for Reading at Home.

Have your child read daily.

Read with your child.

Have your child tell you about what he/she is reading.
Understanding what is being read is an essential part of the reading process.

Let your child see you reading.
Children will acquire a love for reading if they see how important it is to you.
