Fourth Grade has been described as a very challenging year. We consider it a year in which students practice many study skills taught in prior learning experiences. It is a year in which students become totally accountable for more content materials. They must adjust from maybe one test a week to possibly two or three tests a week. There are times when the students may have three tests on a given day. We try very hard to avoid a three test day but occasionally they do occur.
Organization is a vital part of the adjustment. A well organized student will experience less frustration during this period. It is for this reason we encourage the use of the planner for all students. The planner is provided by the school to all students to aid them in developing organizational skills. Please assist us in encouraging your child to use his/her planner. This is a personal responsibility.
Homework is another essential part of the fourth grade learning process. Its purpose is to extend and reinforce concepts and skills that are presented during the instructional day. Reading nightly to or with your child is an excellent way to increase comprehension skills, fulfill the assignment for reading, and to spend some quality time together.
The Virginia Beach City Public Schools system has made available to every parent a “Code of Conduct Booklet.” Please review this carefully with your child to make them aware of appropriate and inappropriate behavior at school, on the bus, and while on field trips.
Keeping lines of communication open between school and home is vital to your child’s success. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any concerns or questions at anytime.
