Fifth grade students experience an exciting and intriguing year at Tallwood. During fifth grade, students participate in a variety of science investigations involving life, physical, and earth science. Units of study include the following: sound and light, rocks and minerals, classification, oceans and atmospheres, forms of matter, earth movements, and physics.
The social studies program builds the pupil's understanding of Virginia history from Native Americans to present times. There is also an emphasis on geography, civics, and the economy of Virginia.
In language arts, we focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking in a child-centered environment.
Mathematics learning at this grade level recognizes and builds on the students' capabilities by expanding the range of their mathematics experiences and ideas. Estimation and problem-solving skills are stressed.
Other activities enjoyed by our fifth graders include Art Club, Chorus, Strings, Peer Tutors, Safety Patrols, and SCA.
